Recipes passed down from an ancient culture have inspired a scientist to start his own herb and flower beverage company and create drinks that both enliven and enlighten.

More than 5,000 years ago, in the southeastern part of Iran, stood a city that was one of the wonders of the prehistoric Bronze age. It was known as Shahr-e Sukhteh.

Much of the history of this city is shrouded in mystery, but it was a real place. Archaeologists have found the remains of the city. The site covers more than 150 hectares and is regarded by archaeologists as one of the world’s largest cities at the dawn of urban settlement.

There is considerable evidence that suggests that the people who lived there were highly civilized and culturally sophisticated. It was here, for example, that archaeologists found the world’s first artificial eyeball, a sphere covered in a thin layer of gold, along with the oldest known backgammon set, and evidence that the residents practised brain surgery as a medical technique.

This ancient metropolis, also known as the Burnt City, because it burned to the ground three times before finally being abandoned, was also a hub of trading routes that connected ancient Mesopotamia and Iran with nations as far away as central Asia, India and even China.

It was, in every way, an ancient melting pot of cultures, trade, and thought, a place fertile with ideas and rich with new ways of thinking.

It should come as no surprise then that such a city is also a place of inspiration. It is from the Burnt City that ancient techniques for growing herbs and flowers have been passed down through countless generations of Iranians. Many of the earthenware pots excavated from the city reveal traces of ancient herbs, possibly used as medical remedies.

And this ancient provenance, says Dr Ali Karami, an Iranian-born research and development scientist, is what has inspired him to set up the world’s first all-natural herb and flower beverage company, Nude Herbs.

“The people who were living in the Burnt City were so advanced for their time,” says Ali. “Not only did they create the first brain surgery, they also created the first animation and they believed in the equality of men and women. The city, in fact, was ruled by women.

“At the same time, they created some recipes to boost their health and constitution, and those recipes have been passed down through generation after generation finally to my father and now to me. And it is my mission to bring them to the world.

“When I was a kid, we used to make the recipes and drink them all the time.”

He insists that the recipes are genuine and that they are born from a long-standing tradition that forbids anything artificial from being added at any stage of the production process.

“It would be against the tradition, against the recipes, so what I have done is combine those ancient recipes through my scientific background with modern natural additives to make them tasty. Just herbs by themselves are not so tasty and you might not enjoy that. But I have managed to create a fruity flavour, without adding any sugar or preservative. In fact, they don’t have anything that is artificial which you might find in other beverages on the market.”

For example, says Ali, one of his three tonics is called Focus (the others are Cleanse and Relax). It is a brewed blend of Gingko Biloba with turmeric, Siberian ginseng, sage, rosemary and green tea and it has a tropical pineapple flavour. (It’s delicious, I tried it). These herbs are all associated with mental acuity.

“This tonic includes Siberian ginseng,” says Ali. “You see sage and rosemary and turmeric; all of these herbs have strong scientific evidence for health benefits from each of the ingredients. They all improve your brain function, mental clarity, concentration. We add significant amounts of these herbs and flowers to our tonics. So, the health benefits are concentrated but when you drink it, it tastes wonderful. It is extremely easy to use.”

“And what is astonishing is that 5,000 years ago, the ancient peoples knew the health benefits of each of these ingredients. It is really quite remarkable.”

Ali Karami was born and raised in the Iranian city of Ahvaz, in southwestern Iran. His father was a bank manager, and his mother was a teacher. In 1983, Ali, then a young boy, was knocked unconscious by a bomb that exploded outside his family’s home. He spent many days in hospital and for a time he could not hear, though he did eventually recover.

“I believe it was this single event that made a permanent change in my subconscious,” says Ali. “It made me a person who genuinely hates wars and for almost all my life it has been my mission to create peace. So, I studied. I achieved my degree and then my PHD because I wanted the best chance to create something that people could consume and help them become healthy.

“I personally believe that you will be able to help the global peace if you have a healthy body and mind. If you don’t have a healthy body and mind, you don’t have the ability to focus on creating peace. You are focused on what is wrong with you. So, I found my purpose in making people healthy.”

Ali moved to Australia in 2017 with the idea of starting his own company, Nude Herbs. Today, his tonics are stocked in 55 stores around Australia and the list is growing every day. He has opened the company up for investment so he can fund new and expanded production facilities that will one day help him reach a global market.

Dr Ali Karami’s juices are healthy, natural and healing

“There is an enormous potential for the business and the list of stores stocking our tonics is jumping by 20 or more every month so we need to expand and produce more,” says Ali. “And who better to invest than the public who drink our products.

“It’s working very well because it is different yet it is genuine and people understand it. During the next 18 months, we intend to be in more than 1,000 stores. I came to Australia as an immigrant and Nude Herbs is my Australian dream.

“It is my dream, and it is coming true, and I am incredibly grateful for that.”
